Collection: (3) TUNG TING WULONG

Considered by many to be Taiwan's "classic" oolong tea, Tung Ting (aka "Dong Ding") oolong originated from Tung Ting Mountain located in Lugu Township of Taiwan's Nantou County. All tea featured in this collection are from nearby farms or tea makers living in Lugu for generations.

Traditional Tung Ting oolong is characterized by medium-high oxidation [40% and above] and extensive charcoal-fired roasting. This results in a straight full-bodied tea with a deep roasted, almost burnt, flavor. Emphasis is placed on "throat melody" (喉韻 hou-yun), the dry, mildy sweet aftertaste that lingers in your throat after sipping the tea.

The current trend, influenced by the popularity of High Mountain oolong, is towards lighter oxidation [20-30%] and lighter roasting in electric ovens. This results in a lighter tea with different aroma and tastes, while preserving the roasted aftertaste characteristic of Tung Ting oolong.    

Both types of Tung Ting oolong are featured in this collection. For tea drinkers first exploring Tung Ting oolong or oolong tea in general, we recommend teas with lighter oxidation and electric oven roasting. For experienced Tung Ting drinkers, we believe the traditional style will be a treat and truly unique experience. 

Note: Tung Ting Mountain and nearby regions of Lugu Township, such as Phoenix Valley, are situated at around 700 meters (2297 feet) altitude. It is not classified in Taiwan as high mountain (elevation above 1000 meters), but it also boasts of a perfect climate and shading provided by perpetually shifting cloud and mists.
